Addendum - Hints, Busts, etc.
Friday night April 28th, I was checking a comment in my blog and ‘Anonymous’ wrote:
“hi rey, hope you’re doing okay...donna's on her way right? tell her i'm mad at her did'nt even say so long or anything....love ya, me.....” That was the first hint. And up to this time, I still don’t know who ‘Anonymous’ was!
Saturday, April 29th Donna called me up twice on my cell without her realizing the number she was calling from is being registered on my cell and I noticed the (045) 961 prefix which is the area code for San Fernando, Pampanga. That was the 2nd hint indicating there was some kind of surprise being planned. Sunday morning I sent a text message to Ephraim fishing for info, “So when did this surprise get conceived?” At this time, I thought the surprise was for Donna to show up at the dinner I was planning for Jack and company at A La Crème. Eph replied, “About two months ago, I’m sorry I won’t be there to see it all happen!” I text’d back, “So THERE IS a surprise!” And then there were no more text messages from Eph!!
Anyway, at the church while I was changing into my barong, the photographer had some kind of dialog prepared while he was taking my pictures, “I was told to take the picture of each ‘sponsor’”. Once Jake took me to the back of the church to change, I willed my mind blank. When I got out into the church, everyone was there: our JASHS Class ’70 group (with Amanda and husband Stan, who are from California), all kinds of friends and relatives including Eph’s Ninangs here, Mergin and Hedy and their family, even Mon David was there! We waited for a few minutes for Father Cito. Donna’s grand nieces Nicole, Michaela, and Ems all looked so pretty in their matching gowns as flower girls. I noticed Mon David walking towards the choir loft. Then Ate Pie told me to go and stand by the altar as if I was ‘waiting’ for my bride. Then here comes my brother Romy and his wife Ate Gonding, Nido and Myrna, Vir and Hedy (she stood proxy for my sister-in-law Leda who was running late). Nido was a huge surprise, he lives in California also. After what seems like an eternity, the church door opened and here comes Donna. It’s hard to describe how I felt. All I know was this extreme joy inside of me. She was beautiful in the same gown she wore at our Silver Wedding. I was told to walk slowly towards the middle of the church to meet her. This felt like one of those scenes in the movies where lovers who’ve been apart for a long time are running towards each other in a meadow in slow motion! And then we hugged, and hugged, and kissed, then hugged some more! I heard this noise at the back of my mind, then I realized everyone in church was applauding! I haven’t been to heaven but that sure felt like it!
Father Cito greeted us and told us real quick he didn’t know it was us he’s going to be officiating the Anniversary Wedding mass for until the last minute when he asked the church secretary for our names.
Towards the end of the ceremony, our newly promoted Bishop Father Bobet came and gave us his blessings.
So instead of saying our vows over the phone or through the Internet, we celebrated our 30th Wedding Anniversary together in church. It was great. Mon David sang Abe Mu Ku and Ikaw. There must have been hundreds of pictures taken. Our wedding car was Donna’s nephew’s Revo, a Toyota SUV/Van of sorts. The flowers were just gorgeous.
After our photographer got satisfied (well, almost) we were driven to Fisherman’s Grill. There await more picture taking. Inside, the restaurant was beautifully decorated. My sister-in-law Leda did a wonderful job in using blown up pictures of ours as props for decoration along with beautiful flowers. Jack’s friend, Rizalina, who by the way acted as the commentator in the church ceremony was the Emcee for the night and she did a great job as well.
The highlight of the reception - in addition to the delicious food prepared by the Fisherman’s Grill staff not to mention Mon David singing Ikaw again but now with everyone watching him and listening intently unlike when he was in church high up in the choir loft - was Nido’s testimonial. Rizalina called on people to make a short speech about us. She called on our high school friend Aqui, our Komadre and Eph’s Ninang Mergin. But when it was Nido’s turn, he became so emotional he literally could not speak. After composing himself, he delivered a deeply touching speech telling the story of our relationship all through the years as their kids Giancarlo and Adrienne were growing up till now in their early teens and how this relationship seems to be coming to an end with us ‘moving’ here in the Philippines.
I promise next blog will be about the construction, well, most of it anyway!
