Rizal, Occidental Mindoro and the Tamaraw
My niece Dolor has been telling me about her ranch up in the mountains of Rizal in Occidental Mindoro with several heads of cattle and she just had to show it to us. Her sister, Eden got a driver for us and we took her Pajero. As usual the way was mostly dirt road. When we got closer, we had to park our vehicle on the foothill and we trekked the rest of the way. We didn't mind the hike because the view on the way up to Dolor's place was just gorgeous.
Unfortunately, her ranch hands couldn't locate the herd. On our way to check out the tamaraw habitat, she showed us white dots up in the mountain saying those were her cattle. You can barely see them but they're on the mountains on the top right of the picture below.
THE TAMARAW
It resembles the common water buffalo, also known as the carabao, but it's not really a water buffalo per se. The tamaraw is a much smaller species indigenous to the island of Mindoro and there's less than 200 left. Yes, that's how critically endangered it is.
We went up to the mountain, to the Tamaraw Gene Pool Farm to check it out up close and personal.
