Sightseeing in Sasebo
Ahh.. it feels good to be sweating, walking in the heat again. I set my alarm for 6:30 this morning, got up, leashed Indo and we started walking.
..sweating, walking..
Who am I kidding? I left Donna still deep in slumber and it's so difficult not to just shut the alarm off and go back to bed with the hum of the AC lulling me back to sleep. Oh well, back to my routine, at least till the 15th.
Yesterday, I went to the Marquee Mall and watched Iron Man 2.
Spoiler Alert: Please, do not click on the link if you haven't seen the movie. Iron Man 2 wasn't bad. I really liked the character played by Scarlett Johansson. She added an extra mphh to the movie.
So back to my blog..
POINTS OF INTEREST IN SASEBO
We also went to a place called Pearl Sea Resort which is part of the Saikai National Park. We took the boat tour around the Kuju-ku Islands on board the Pearl Queen.

The Kuju-ku Islands is a group of more than 200 islands belonging to the city of Sasebo. The area is famous for pearls and its oyster farms.

POINTS OF INTEREST IN SASEBO
House in the Forest
Reggie and Manami took us to this theme park called Huis Ten Bosch. It's a few minutes drive from their place in Sasebo. Once we entered the park, we literally got transformed from touring Japan into touring the Netherlands complete with tulips, windmills and typical Dutch architecture. Donna had this idea of me tricking my Facebook friends into thinking we took a side trip to Europe.

There are way too many pictures of Huis Ten Bosch that I took for me to post them all here. So here's my Flickr account where you can view all of them.

Ishidake Lookout
With my aversion to watching animals in captivity, we didn't bother going to the Aquarium part of the resort. Right after our tour, we had lunch at Lucky Burgers. It's said that Sasebo style burger is famous all over Japan, being introduced by an American sailor years ago. So yes, I had me some beef. Sue me!

Right after lunch, Reggie drove to Kujukushima Scenic Point (Ishidake Lookout) overlooking Kujuku Islands. There was a shot in the beginning of the movie The Last Samurai showing a sunset scene over the islands.

Midway down, we passed by Sasebo Zoological and Botanical Gardens. Donna and I were busy taking pictures when here comes Manami calling us back. We didn't realize we were at the section of the zoo where we should have paid for the entrance fee, so we immediately went out whispering, "Gomenasai" to the staff.

And here's the rest of the Ishidake Lookout pics.
Talk about lookouts, he also took us to Yumihari Lookout, another part of Saikai National Park, overlooking the whole of Sasebo (including the US Naval Base) on one side and the Kujuku Islands on another. We passed by a small cave system on another part of the city before actually going up to Yumihari.

He took us here during the night time as well to get a different feel of the place, which I posted on another blog.
Saikaibashi Park
Another tourist spot that they took us was the famous Saikaibashi Park to view the whirlpools under the Saikai Bridges. Sadly, by the time we visited, all the cherry blossoms are gone. At first glance, this river looks strange because its water flows from the sea but it turns out, it's not really a river but part of the bay. The bridges are just linking the islands together.

The Sasebo River is a nice 20 minute walk from Reggie and Manami's place. It's close to Yonka-Cho, the 1 km long shopping arcade said to be the longest enclosed mall in all of Japan. Crossing the river is Albuquerque Bridge (Albuquerque, New Mexico being Sasebo's sister city), a pedestrian bridge connecting the city to nearby Sasebo Park and Nimitz Park, the latter frequented by US Navy families.
