LAST DAY IN JAPAN
April 26, 2010
We woke up fairly early not wanting to be late for the 10 am bus from Sasebo to the Fukuoka airport. Donna did some finishing touches on our luggage. She's getting stressed out because we're limited to 20 kilos each (or so we thought). Once the cab which Manami called came, we headed to the Sasebo Bus Center. This is what the bus station is called, don't ask me why. We got there with enough time to grab some sandwiches since we were in a rush and didn't have time for breakfast. We were ready to get on the bus but Reggie had to go to the bathroom. Right when it was ready to pull out, here comes Reggie. Talk about a buzzer beater.

Of course, we arrived at the airport on the dot with time enough for lunch. Josephine said in her eMail that she's going to meet us but we didn't see her. Reggie and I went to the lockers and deposited our luggage so we wouldn't be dragging them around with us in the terminal and in the restaurant.

We had our last Japanese lunch in one of the third floor restaurants.

After lunch, Reggie got a message from Josephine in his voice mail saying she's in the terminal. When we got closer to the check in counter we saw her waving at us.

After talking a bit more, Reggie and Manami went to retrieve our luggage from the lockers, and we fell in line to check in. We found out too late that we're allowed 30 kilos each on our luggage instead of 20. Donna had to leave some stuff behind instructing Reggie to mail it to us to California as soon as they get their base PO box.

Josephine was nice enough to give us a few minutes to ourselves to bid proper goodbyes.

It was tough saying goodbye. We'll miss you guys!

ARRIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES
The flight was mostly smooth. We watched Sandra Bullock's Blind Side. On a side note, I didn't think her performance was worth a Best Actress Oscar. Then again, what do I know. They served a simple meal after the movie and of course as per Murphy's Law, we hit some turbulence while we're eating. It didn't last too long however.

I sent Pap, our driver, a text message when we arrived telling we've landed while we were waiting for our luggage to come around in the conveyors. He text'd back saying, "Please wait, something happened."

Don't you hate it when you're left hanging with that kind of statement? But since I retired, I've developed a deeper sense of patience, or so I thought. When we were out on the curbside with our luggage and everything and he's still not there, I sent him another message inquiring where he was.

Finally he replied, "I hope you don't get angry but I was in an accident. I'm on my way."

So now, all kinds of nasty thoughts were swirling around in my mind but I was able to hold off sending another text message thinking he's driving now and I don't want to make it worse.

A few minutes later and here he comes. I immediately noticed the front grill of the Innova was missing and it's got a big dent on it's right fender and the hood has buckled up a bit.

THE ACCIDENT
He was on EDSA around Cubao. A driver of a car slammed his brakes trying to avoid hitting a dog, he got hit by an SUV (a Toyoto Fortuner, similar to the Sequioa) which of course slammed his brakes as well and Pap rear ended the Fortuner.

We headed on home and the van overheated during the traffic. Pap pulled over into a gas station, poured some water on to the radiator and when it got cool enough for him to take the cap off, he poured water into the radiator. It overheated once more right before the first exit in Bulacan and we pulled over at a rest stop to cool it down and had dinner at the same time. He then got off on the Tabang off ramp and we took the old northbound McArthur Highway, stopping every other gas station to fill up the radiator. A usual 2 hour trip from the airport took us 4 hours. My nephew Francis has a body shop on Lazatin Blvd called Talyer ni Kiko and I called him as soon as we got home. He told me to get a hold of the insurance company and report the accident.

Manami and Reggie called us Monday night, by the way, wanting to make sure we got home ok. And this morning it's Eph and Rach who called, concerned about my eMail telling them about the accident.

Within the last few days, we've been coordinating with the insurance adjuster to have it fixed. I thought of having the radiator replaced so I'll have something to drive while we're here and I'll just turn it in to Francis after May 15 when we've left for the US.

Today, after a few days of driving around without air conditioning, (did I mention how hot it is over here nowadays?) and always carrying a couple of gallons of water to fill up the radiator every now and then, the radiator finally got replaced.

It rained last night which gave us a respite from the heat and it rained again today - a little too much though. As evidenced by pics below.

Tomorrow, on my birthday and our wedding anniversary, Donna and I are planning on going to the Monasterio de Tarlac to hear mass over there.

I'll be posting some more of our 2010 Japan adventure on forthcoming blogs.
